...Unsettled weather and severe thunderstorm chances ramp up across parts
of the central and southern Plains this week...

...Above average temperatures throughout the western and central United
States, with cooler weather in the Great Lakes and much of the East...

The mostly quiet weather pattern experienced the last few days over the
Lower 48 is expected to gradually retreat as an upper trough develops over
the western U.S. midweek and sparks increasing thunderstorm chances
throughout the Great Plains and parts of the Midwest. First, a pair of
cold fronts crossing the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley today will spread
showers and isolated thunderstorms over the region before reaching the
Northeast on Wednesday. Temperatures may drop rapidly enough for
precipitation to end as snow across northern New England. Meanwhile, a
trailing cold front entering the southern Plains will be the focus for
thunderstorms over the next few days from northern and West Texas to
central Oklahoma. A few storms could be capable of producing large hail
and damaging wind gusts across northwest Texas today, which has prompted
the Storm Prediction Center to issue a Slight Risk (level 2/5) of severe
weather. A few isolated severe thunderstorms may also develop off a
southern High Plains dryline on Wednesday ahead of the approaching western
upper trough. This upper level system will aid in more widespread shower
and thunderstorm activity throughout the central and southern Plains on
Thursday. Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible as low pressure
develops over the central High Plains and a strengthening dryline pushes
eastward, with most of the severe potential located between south-central
Nebraska and northern Texas. Along with the severe thunderstorm threat,
heavy rain could lead to isolated instances of flash flooding.

Elsewhere, unsettled weather is also in the forecast throughout parts of
the Great Basin and eventually the Pacific Northwest by Thursday as
initial upper ridging and well above average temperatures gradually erode.
Much of the rainfall is expected to be mostly beneficial outside of any
lightning potential with thunderstorms over the central Great Basin. Highs
throughout the southwest are anticipated to reach the 80s and 90s through
Wednesday, with 60s and 70s for much of the Intermountain West.

Cooler weather is in store for the Great Lakes and much of the eastern
U.S. beginning with the potential for frost this morning from the southern
Appalachians to southern New England. Lows dipping into the 30s here may
damage sensitive plants and vegetation if left unprotected. Temperatures
are forecast to rebound this afternoon as highs reach into the 60s and 70s
ahead of the next spring cold front entering from the Great Lakes tonight.
This will allow for midweek temperatures to drop to around 10 to 20
degrees below average for the Great Lakes and Northeast, equating to high
temperatures ranging from the 40s in northern locations to 60s along the
northern Mid-Atlantic coastline.

...Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain possible for the Plains and
Mississippi Valley late this week through this weekend...


...Overview...

The upper level pattern through this weekend will feature mean
troughing over the western U.S. while a ridge builds into the East
Coast. This pattern will result in unsettled weather in the West
and fairly benign weather for the East Coast. A couple of potent
shortwaves/embedded upper lows will travel through the base of the
western trough and eject northeastwards across the Central U.S.
towards the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes, which will trigger rounds of
active, and potentially hazardous, weather across portions of the
Plains and Mississippi Valley. Early next week, a deep upper low
will slide south along the western coast of Canada towards the
Pacific Northwest, and the ridge that was situated over the East
Coast will shift offshore into the Atlantic.


...Guidance/Predictability Assessment...

Model guidance continues to show good agreement on the overall
upper level pattern, but there is still some disagreement on finer
scale details, which is to be expected in the medium range time
period. The main features of interest will be the two upper level
shortwaves that are forecast to bring impactful weather to the
Central U.S. through the weekend. Agreement is high on the timing
and location of the first shortwave Friday into Saturday, but model
solutions show a bit more divergence with the second shortwave
Sunday into Monday. The 12Z ECMWF is the quickest with the second
wave, the 12Z UKMET is the slowest, and the 18Z GFS and 12Z CMC
fall in between, closer to the ensemble means. A blend of the
deterministic GFS/ECMWF/CMC/UKMET was used for the WPC forecast for
Friday through Sunday to get a middle of the road solution close
to the GFS and ensemble mean solutions. The 00Z GFS and ECMWF were
not available at the time that the forecast was made; however,
they remain consistent with the trends shown in their previous
runs.

After Sunday, there are some more significant differences in how
the models handle the upper low moving down the West Coast, which
has an impact on the evolution of downstream features as well. One
way to mitigate these differences was to add ensemble means to the
WPC blend to smooth out some of the differences. The CMC seemed to
be an outlier compared to the other available guidance, so it was
removed from the WPC model blend for days 6 and 7 (Monday and
Tuesday).


...Weather/Hazards Highlights...

Late this week, an upper level shortwave will move northeast
across the Central U.S. and will be accompanied by a surface low
pressure system. The surface low will move across the Central
Plains and Upper Midwest on Friday, lifting a warm front north
across the South-Central U.S. and pushing a cold front across the
Central/Southern Plains and Middle/Upper Mississippi Valley. This
system is forecast to produce showers and thunderstorms over
portions of the Plains and Mississippi Valley, and the ingredients
(instability and moisture) will be in place for locally heavy
rainfall totals. A broad Marginal Risk area remains in place for
portions of the Plains and Middle/Upper Mississippi Valley in the
Day 5 (Friday) ERO. The southern tail of the trailing cold front is
forecast to stall across the Southern Plains on Saturday while
another surface low develops over the Southern/Central Plains,
which will focus another round of heavy precipitation across the
Southern Plains and Mid-Mississippi Valley. A Marginal Risk area
was introduced for these regions in the Day 5 (Saturday) ERO.

In addition to heavy rainfall, severe thunderstorms will be
possible ahead of the dryline in the warm sector of this system,
and the Storm Prediction Center has highlighted portions of the
Plains and Mississippi Valley in the Severe Weather Outlook for
Friday and Saturday. Isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms
will be possible and may bring a threat of damaging winds, large
hail, and tornadoes. On the western side of the dryline, strong
winds and low humidity will create and increased wildfire risk for
portions of New Mexico, west Texas, the Texas and Oklahoma
panhandles, and far southeastern Colorado.

Over the weekend, a second upper level shortwave will develop over
the Southwest then push across the Central U.S. towards the Upper
Midwest early next week. This system will bring another round of
showers and potentially severe thunderstorms to portions of the
Plains and much of the Mississippi Valley. Precipitation chances
will also spread into the Ohio Valley and Northeast over the
weekend as the leading system moves over the top of the East Coast
ridge. By Monday-Tuesday, the East Coast ridge will move offshore
into the Atlantic, and the trailing cold front associated with the
second low pressure system will bring precipitation chances to the
Gulf and East Coasts.

In the West, mean upper troughing will allow precipitation chances
to persist across much of the region through the end of this week,
but drier conditions will likely develop over the Southwest early
next week. Precipitation will fall as rain at lower elevations and
as snow at higher elevations. Daily high temperatures will likely
remain slightly below normal across the West, but highs may return
to near normal in the Southwest Sunday through Tuesday after
precipitation comes to an end.

Temperatures will trend above normal across much of the south-
central and eastern U.S. as a warm front lifts north later this
week, and high temperatures will likely reach the 70s and 80s for

The subtropical high will remain in place to the north of the
state through the week then shift to the northeast and weaken
slightly this weekend. Northeast to easterly trade winds will
persist, though winds may decrease over the weekend as the high
weakens. This pattern will favor precipitation chances each day
for windward locations, and conditions will remain mainly dry for
southwestern portions of the Islands. A low pressure system is
forecast to develop to the northwest on Friday and bring a
trailing front towards the northernmost islands next week, but the
front will likely be blocked by the subtropical ridge and remain
northwest of the state. Impacts from this system are forecast to
be minimal.

The probability of rainfall exceeding flash flood guidance is less

Guidance continues to show an area of convective development
across central and eastern OK within a low- level convergence field
associated with a stalled boundary over the southern Plains north
of the Red River. The atmosphere is expected to be uncapped, based
on 700 hPa temperatures forecast. Modest instability located over
the region due to active return flow regime will aid in the
convective pattern and create an environment capable of low- end
flash flooding concerns, especially within any training cells
within the confines of the stalled front. All guidance, to some
degree has a QPF maximum between north- central OK over into the
Lower Mississippi Valley. Spread within the model guidance remains
high, both in placement and magnitude; the 00z ECMWF remains the
wettest. The overall synoptic pattern of precipitable water values
approaching 1.5", CAPE of 1000-2000 J/kg, and enough 850 hPa
inflow/effective bulk shear to support organized convection. Hourly
rain totals to 2" with local amounts to 4" are possible within
this environment. Higher FFG indices/drier soils are in place over
many of the areas that could receive heavy rainfall. The general
model trend has been slightly northward, away from the more
sensitive soils caused by recent heavy rainfall near the Red River
of the South. Considering the setup, once the guidance shows better
convergence, a Marginal Risk could be in the offing.

...A MARGINAL RISK OF EXCESSIVE RAINFALL EXISTS ACROSS PORTIONS OF
THE PLAINS AND MIDWEST...

Strengthening moisture flux across the Plains and Midwest ahead of
a low pressure system is expected to raise the precipitable water
values to 1.5"+. Inflow at 850 hPa is forecast towards 60 kts,
with effective bulk shear to match. A broad area of 1000-3000 J/kg
of CAPE is forecast by SREF guidance. Temperatures at 700 hPa
suggest a relatively uncapped atmosphere. The above ingredients
support mesocyclone formation, which can be producers of heavy
rainfall, moreso where cells align, despite what should be quick
cell motion. Cell training is possible as the deep layer flow is
out of the south-southwest. The guidance has a stronger signal for
heavy rainfall somewhere between the southern Plains, Mississippi
Valley, and the Midwest Thursday and Thursday night than advertised
the previous day, but agreement is lacking on location which is
keeping the WPC QPF magnitude modest. Like the previous day, the
00z ECMWF is the wettest with a signal over 9" near the KS/OK
border. As heavy rainfall is expected of some magnitude across
portions of OK and AR on Wednesday and Wednesday night, expanded
the Marginal Risk southward from continuity to cover those areas.
Should the guidance converge on location, a Slight Risk upgrade
would be possible as we get closer to the event. Hourly rainfall to
2.5" with local amounts to 5" are expected, which would be most
impactful in urban areas and areas with saturating soils between
now and Thursday.

Day 3...

A pair of upper level troughs; one in the central Rockies and
another approaching the Pacific Northwest, will produce some high
elevation mountain snow in parts of these regions mountain ranges
Thursday night. The most notable ranges expecting moderate-to-
heavy snowfall include the Olympics, Cascade Range, Blue Mountains,
the Absaroka, Tetons, Wind River, and Colorado Rockies. Elevations
most likely to see the heaviest totals would be >6,000ft in the
Olympics and Cascade Range, >7,000ft in the Blue Mountains, and
>9,000ft in the Absaroka, Tetons, Wind River, and Colorado Rockies.
WPC PWPF generally shows low chances (10-30%) for >6" of snowfall
at or above those listed elevations. Look for additional mountain
snow to take shape during the day on Friday. Little in the way of
snowfall in the valleys of the Intermountain West are expected.


The probability of significant icing is less than 10 percent.
